Thicker is better
Replacing flooring is a large, sometimes stressful remodel project and a huge investment, so choosing good quality products are key to it lasting a lifetime.
General rule of thumb….”thicker is better” and “you get what you pay for”.
A hardwood floor that has a 1.5 wood layer and is only 3/8” thick is probably about a 2-3 year floor before you start seeing the wear and tear from kids, pets and furniture. Could this be an okay solution for a single person that doesn’t wear shoes in the house and has no pets, yes, it could be.
A hardwood floor that has a 2 mil wear layer and is ½” thick is a step up, giving you a few more years of life. Again, it’s only .5 thicker on the top than the first option.
And the wood that is “just right” as Goldilocks said….……. look for a wear layer of 3mm to 4mm and a thickness over ½” . This gives you a substantial wood top and structurally can withstand life a lot better.
Same concept with Luxury Vinyl planks and Laminate flooring options….stay with a 5 mil thickness or more on LVP and a 10mm thickness or more on Laminate. Do we want to replace floors ever again? No….we want them to last.
Carpet density is measured by face weight and the number of twists in the yarn.
Ask for reputable carpet brands, look at the manufacturer warranty, choose higher end fibers and stay around 50 ounces or higher on a plush carpet or a better quality looped option. Ask about cushion options based on your preferences for softness or firmness.
And lastly, come to a full service professionally trained specialty store like Atlanta Flooring Design Centers for the best experience!
